While dining, guests were entertained by a synchronized swimming water show -- a finale to an evening that clearly made a big splash.

Water World
Walking on water may be the stuff of magic, but not for the guests of an incentive dinner produced by Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based COMCOR Event and Meeting Production at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida. The event crew, which included the hotel's food and beverage staff, and Santa Barbara, California-based designer John Daly, sought to give guests a memorable evening by creating a Havana-themed dinner on the hotel's pool--the largest hotel pool in the United States.

Water World To accomplish this, COMCOR president Mona Meretsky called on Miami-based Tropical Event Equipment Fabricators to create a clear acrylic platform in the middle of the pool that would accommodate 60 guests, as well as a canopy, tables, chairs and decor.

A patented expandable truss system developed by Tropical Event served as the backbone for the project. A 90-foot-long footbridge was created, in the middle of which was the 24-by-24-foot platform. Sheets of specially cut, bullet-proof, clear acrylic glass were reinforced onto the platform part of the truss system, while opaque white sheets of acrylic were used for the bridge. A railing around the entire structure ensured safety.

Once installed, the platform was ready for decor. Railings were camouflaged with bamboo poles. Tables were covered in bright coral cloths and centered with 4-foot tropical arrangements made of pink and white anthuriums, banana leaves, split papayas, green bananas and other exotic fruits. White wicker chairs with leopard-print cushions added to the tropical veranda feel. Buffet tables were covered in assorted vintage tropical print fabrics. Amber and pink lighting, designed by Los Angeles-based Images By Lighting, completed the look. For dinner, the hotel's catering staff created a Cuban menu based on tapas, paella and flan. While dining, guests were entertained by a synchronized swimming water show--a finale to an evening that clearly made a big splash.
